Humanitarian “Traci Cook”

I’m 36 and live in central Illinois with my wonderful boyfriend and our 4 dogs. I have a full time job working on a telecom help desk and I have a doggy bakery that I do on the side. I’m the equivalent of the “crazy cat lady”… but with dogs! LOL I learned to sew last fall and it turns out there is very little “sewing” in sewing, its a lot of planning and measuring and cutting… things I’m not that fond of, however blankets are just squares. I like to do volunteer work, especially with animals, but I don’t have a lot of time. So I have several friends who work in rescue and one of them had mentioned that they needed blankets at animal control. This was the PERFECT newbie project. Especially since dogs were the perfect recipient. They don’t care about colors or fabric or patterns… they are just happy to have a blanket. So I started sewing blankets for animal shelters and my friends dogs. I”m not sure how many I”ve done but they’ve been pretty popular and sadly they are a much needed item at the shelters. AND I get fabric and thrift stores for a steal and I am able to sew when I can while I”m at home. It’s a small contribution, but if everyone did a little…think of how great the world could be.Tracie Cook

All Dogs Go To Church

dog-prayer In honor of National Dog week, Calvary Episcopal Church in Danvers, Massachusetts announced their “Perfect Paws Pet Ministry.”

Starting later this month they plan to offer services for church members and their pets. Services will include communion for owners and special treats for their four-legged companions.

Similar news has been reported from other areas of the country.

“I don’t have any kids, so my pets have always been my children, so it does mean a lot,” Emma Sczesniak told the Associated Press. Accompanied by her Dachshund-terrier mix and black Lab, she said that though she’d fallen away from church, the dog-friendly service “might push me into it.”

Laura Hobgood-Oster, a religion professor at Southwestern University, says she’s heard of a half-dozen pet-friendly services in the U.S. — for instance, “Woof ‘n’ Worship” held at Pilgrim Congregational Church outside of Boston — though traditionally Christians believe only humans have redeemable souls.
